"Our genes on the bridge" - interview in Vercenje Novosti, serbian magazine, 21 March 2009

In the soul of Kusturica you can found traces of Andric. In his Küstendorf home, he named a street after the famous Literature Nobel Prize writer, the biggest rebel of world cinematography brings, like a destiny, the idea to a make film-opera ”The bridge on the Drina“. The main role will be played as he told, by the bridge itself, built in ancient times, between screen and audience all around world. Above fast and furious water.

  • Emir Kusturica : I told a long time ago, that it will be the biggest film of Yugoslav cinemtography. The state has disappeared and I shot Underground. The idea about „Bridge“ survived, because the novel is the best response about who we are and where we are going. It would be much more easier to make another bridge, rather than a film. But I have no fear !
  • Is it the importance of searching for identity, or something else, that moved state structures to support the project ?
    • EK : People who made the bridge and walked on it, are our ancestors. It is extremely important to paint on screen Andric's knowledge, and make the film as an asylum of emotions, because this novel got for Balkanian people the meaning of the Bible. When I connect and make bridge from screen to audience, I will know that I succeeded.
  • Time length of 300 year was the biggest problem since today for shooting …
    • EK : Through three centuries, over the bridge, ran out all our genes, and this was told very precisely in Andric's way. The problem of compatibility and the whole circle of the story will be resolved by putting inside the consequences which occur from novel as of today. The aesthetics and the moral in „Bridge“ is something that had to be shot.
  • You will start to shoot in Mokra Gora and Višegrad, and that can be a chance for you to break your word that you will never ever go back in Bosnia.
    • EK : Sarajevo is that Bosnia in which I never go back. It is just not on my road. I don't insist on words I said many time ago, but a man goes where one likes him, and where he likes to go. From the other side, I go to Višegrad very often. When the audience watches a good film, they are impressed with art above lives, and in those moments, all regions disappear. I want the film to unite the nations.
  • Your films are succesfull in cinemas all around world. Can you predict the reception of „Bridge“ in nations from ex Yugoslavia ?
    • EK : Each benevolent person will appreciate the fact that „Bridge“ will help us on an emotional plan. Sarajevo's taxi drivers or people who bake cevapcici are direct ancestors of people who walked over the bridge during years, and I hope that some people who need to cut their genesis will not be stronger of impression.
  • Is it possible that film will be finished in 2011, for the 50 years of Andrić's Nobel award ?
    • EK : Hardly, but we will give the best. Ministry of culture Nebojsa Bradic brought some nice news from Turkey and Germany, where he was recently. When I'll be back from our tour in Mexico, we will have a meeting and discuss bout the details. Then we'll start to work.
  • You have experiences with producers from Europe. Can a Serbian film get enough budget for such a great novel ?
    • EK : Yes of course. The idea is spectacular. In making of both a film and a tv show, then will take part state, producers, coproducers. First thing is to have a good script, and I will gather few people for that, including me. Then we'll start to compose music, and after all, we'll run for money.
  • In modern times, big films hardy can find their road to audience, because we can watch films on mobile phones today…
    • EK : Modern sensibility is the reason why we decided to make tv show. Great films have power to impact on audience, but this one will have power on presence. I believe this film will be spectacular. I believe that it will be strong for catharsis effect all around planet, in that miracle which Blakanian people again and again bring up to tragedy.
